Default thinking of trying GuildWars...

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and haven't played the game yet but considering getting it.

Just some little questions I would like to ask...
- Do we kill mobs again and again to level up? (eg, maplestory)
- Level cap?
- What's the difference between Guild Wars Prophecy and Guild Wars Factions?

Some guy said this regarding the game, "Guild Wars is now called Guild Wars Prophecies, and is the first installment of the series. Prophecies is more focused on player versus enemy and the story lasts longer. Guild Wars Factions on the other hand is more player versus player based, but its story is much shorter than Prophecies. You do not need both to play either game but if you get both you can take your characters over to both continents/worlds."
Is it true?

It would be best if someone could compare it to WoW because I have never played a better mmorpg than WoW so far.
thanks

GW is more about mastering skill sets and PvP builds than leveling and spawn-camping for uber gear. For example, in GW, it's fairly easy to acquire the most uber or perfect weapons and armor.

The cap is 20 which you can get to in a few days. From there you go on to acquiring Elite skills and additional regular skills, while advancing through the games missions, quests, explorable PvE areas, and various PvP battle areas. There are also a few advanced "dungeon" type areas for a PvE challenge.

Factions and Prophesies are basically 2 overlapping games. If you only have one, you access only that PvE content and its skills in addition to some core shared skills.

The GW vs WoW debate is endless. WoW is a more traditional MMORPG, while GW is a skill-based PvP-type game with some pretty good PvE mixed in.

Think of Guild Wars as a "lite" RPG.

The PvE storyline is very easy to progress through. If you were to do every mission without skipping you could finish the entire story by yourself in a month or two. I know some people go faster with well built groups and getting runs from place to place. With 28 missions (and quite a few requiring you to run them a second time for the monus) and lord knows how many quests it could take a whole lot longer is you are playing a few different characters and/or taking your time.

The NPCs available to group with gives you something most other RPG's dont... the ability to log on and jump right in the game. No sitting around forever LFG. Granted, the NPC's AI can be a real PITA until you learn their weaknesses and how to compensate for them.

I used to hate how Guild Wars forces you to only move in it's certain pathways, but you get used to that.

I like how monsters don't run (except for some AoE effects) making you chase them across the entire zone. It's also nice how stuff will let ya go if yer runnin from it, unlike some RPGs where stuff will chase you to the end of the earth.

Also, as already mentioned, Guild Wars focuses on organized PvP. Seeing as you play WoW you already know about their PvP.

Did I mention Guild Wars has actually released an expansion? LOL, not sure what is up with Blizzard on that? Maybe the demand was so high they've had to spend too much time quadrupeling their servers to actually make an expansion.

Now, a few things you'll not find in Guild Wars...

Raids. There are no big time raid mobs in Guild Wars (not yet anyway).

There are no required huge time sinks in Guild Wars. If you want to buy 15k armor or the "perfect" weapon then you may need to farm a little, but none of that stuff is required to be the best in your chosen class.

No tradeskills. There is an economy though if you're into buying and selling.

Oh yeah... NO MONTHLY FEE!!! It may not be a big deal to some but I am not so fond of paying for a game over and over and over. After 5yrs of EQ (4 of them with 2 accounts) the money really adds up.

-=-

I'll add to this if I think of anything else.

Another key difference GW has with typical MMORPGs is that it's instanced, meaning there are no separate servers and that when you leave the town to go fight there will be no one else there but NPCs and your team members. This means no spawn-camping, but less community I guess.

Finally, with GW you have multiple character slots. Since there are no separate servers, you can have multiple toons in the same world. You can reserve 1 of these slots for a PvP-only toon, which can't farm or do missions, but can access any skills, weapons, or mods unlocked by any of your toons on your account. Nice because you can basically play any character class or build you want at the drop of a hat once you've unlocked your stuff.

Oh yeah... Bourbon reminded me...

Guild Wars has a much more limited number of character slots.

With most MMORPGs you have 8 slots or so on each server. This gives you a crazy number of possible characters. I know this because my son filled up all the slots in City of Heroes trying out all the different possibilities.

Guild Wars also as a much smaller number of inventory slots. I'm not sure what WoW has but EQ had 8 slots on your character that you could put 10 slot bags into. Then in the bank you had 16 more slots per character. You also had two shared slots that any character on that account and on that server could access.

That's 240 slots per character. And 20 slots shared.

Guild Wars gives you nowhere near that amount of room. Luckily, for the most part, you don't really need it.

Stackable items in GW will fit up to 250 per stack and like I said before there are no real tradeskill stuff needed. You do need to have some space to store components used to make armor and stuff but there's only a dozen or so kind of things to keep up with.

The only real trouble is when you are a packrat like myself.

Then you will run into space issues

I did not understand everything you guys said, my vocab of English is not that huge heh. However on that bolded part what do you do after you have accquired level 20 and done the supposedly 28 missions? Do them again on another class? Btw, just for some IGN matters could one of you try making a new character and tell me how many letters are allowed in the IGN?

Hi Ruzz.

Hi community,
For me guild wars is a luxury MMO where the community takes precedence in all my experiences.

I played world of warcraft for 3 years, had 3 lvl 60 characters and two with alot of epics. Guild wars really starts at 20 . Alot like wow would start at 60 and as far as what you do with guild wars from my experience at 20 is really up to you, while you let the story unfold.

Elite skills, armour upgrades, farming grinding , quests and missions/instances are most of my played routine.

I'm pretty sure the limit on your character name is 17 letters.

Do you get lost easily in Guild Wars? I like it the way WoW has a very detailed and accessible map and it's full screen. From your opinion which game would you say is um better?

Guild Wars Compared to WoW:

-In Guild Wars you don't need to grind over and over to level up.
-WoW you have professions (eg:blacksmithing) Guild Wars you don't.
-WoW you're doing PvP since you're a beginner in battlegrounds, Guild Wars you usually save that til you're 20.
-In Guild Wars you can get to the cap level in a couple weeks compared to months with WoW.
-You can have tons of characters in WoW, only 4 in GW.
-One race in GW (human)
-WoW has a lot of dungeons, GW has a couple.
-Tons of armor and weapons in WoW, only a few in GW.
-You combine two classes in GW rather than having one in WoW.
-Guild Wars has no online fee with lots of content, so its easier on the wallet, and personally I think GW can supply a lot of fun just like WoW.

You want an immersive RPG experience with a persistent world ? Don't play Guild Wars.

Bottom Line:

PvE Player = Look Elsewhere (World of Warcraft best choice)
PvP Player = This game is right for you (although GW:Factions is more heavy on PvE than PvP)

Wink I've enjoyed the game

If you have the money buy both but learn how to link the game before you just load up and play.

Guild Wars is amazing in that at times you enter a neat exploreable world and at other times it is painfully linear and you feel like a rat being run through a funnel.

Some of the fight sceens are as good as I've ever experienced in one mission on Fractions your part a group of eight meets up with another group of eight and you end up fighting an unGodly number of creatures on three different fronts it's one heck of a melee.

You can have so many different types of armor, weapons, skills, you have your primary profession one of eight if you are in Fractions and then a secondary skill you pick one of the seven left. Think that's 56 different combinations.

There are more things I wish this game had in it but it's a fun game nothing is perfect Guild Wars is very very good.

IMO... WoW is for serious MMORPG with very indepth story etc....GW like some1 else said...a lite version of WoW, easy to pick up, easy to put down, play at ur own pace, not pressured at all....if u want somin different than WoW, but u dont want GW, u want to try somin really unique... play CoH/CoV that has some unique stuff in it, and is surprisingly fun/addicting.
there are pro's and con's to each game, but....in the end...if I HAD to rate them. 1) WoW 2)(very, very close behind) CoH/CoV 3)GW

Pro-WoW is ... so insiane, i think its very balanced, in depth (Ex. the AH), so many ppl on it, great ideas too (like Shift + Click makes a link ).
Con-WoW has no....small servers, Ex. IF = lag city. WoW ruins ppl lives due to its Pro's...

Pro- CoH/CoV ... its almost a coming of age type feeling when u leap over 20 buildings in a single bound. No true spamming. Unique monetary economy & "upgrades". Some sweet moves/Abilities, Ex. lvl 50 Energy blaster (or somin) + Nova in Perez Park = Lawl material. imagine 20 gang guys being blows backwards, instantly dieing as a surge of energy explodes from ur body. and Costum Contests are the most fun u will ever have just sitting around doing nothing...seriously.
Con-CoH/CoV ... not the greatest when it comes to balancing classes...u can get powerleveled very easily, (but uniquely too).

Pro- GW... like i said earlier, easy pick up, easy put down. i love how u can draw on the map. GW was made specifically with dial up, 56K users in mind (<<< ME!!!)
Neutral- how u only meet ppl outside ur team in outposts/towns.
Con-GW... S P A M ugh............................................... ........................................ .................................................. ..................

o, and BTW

I think the most important thing is we can play guildwars at our own pace, since theres no monthly fees and stuff. For me, if i were to play Wow, i'll try to play as much as i can for the money i've paid, thus making me addicted. On the other hand, Guildwars lets me go at my own pace, stop whenever i want. If u're thinking of a more orc elves lord of the rings fantasy mmorpg, go for Wow. If not, try guildwars. Hell, just get the 14day trial key from someone n test it out 1st , thats woot i did.
